Ancestral Story

Instagram Posts

Ancestral Story is a small genealogical blog focusing on individual stories of ancestors as well as historical events. The Instagram account features supplemental images, including those promoting the blog and those that are a microblog on their own if they don't have a detailed enough story for their own full blog post.

FULL TEXT: The Richmond Sixteen were a group of conscientious objectors in WWI who were forced to serve in the British military despite their beliefs. Some were allowed to stay on British soil where they would provide non-combative aide to the British forces. However, being opposed to war means being opposed to ALL parts of war.

The Sixteen refused to complete duties or follow orders and were imprisoned in North Yorkshire's Richmond Castle where messages like this, music, and drawings could be found from the Sixteen on their cell walls.

Because they couldn't be executed on British soil for failure to comply, they were sent to the Western Front where they were set to be discharged and sentenced to death.

Read more about these brave men in last Friday's Ancestral Story blog post.

FULL TEXT: My great grandmother Dorothy had my grandpa when she was 18 and unmarried.

3 years later, in 1943, she married her cousin, Percy, who was also 17 years her senior and never married.

A year after their marriage, they had a son, Leonard.

And 2 years after that, they left England behind and took a ship to Canada where they would live the rest of their lives.

Photo: Percy (left), my grandpa, Dorothy, Leonard

I hope that I'll eventually be able to figure out my grandpa's dad. DNA maybe just be the thing to break through that wall. Time to learn!

He went missing on D-Day (6 June 1944) as he made his way with his unit from the UK to France and was presumed dead until it looks like his remains were found and he was buried at Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery in France.
